come from a file defined with SQL. :-) Any D specs would use LIKE.

I don't know about that, Rob. Sure, if you're talking about BLOBs and
CLOBs, you're talking about SQL. But not all data used by computers is
stored in SQL databases :).

Sure, there's a need for large temporary buffers. Very large buffers are great for toolmakers because it's just one less thing to worry about.

But there is a practical real-world need to store large varying length text in a single DB2 column. Not terabytes, but say a megabyte. Between HIPAA, SOX and the rise of the auditor to semi-divine status, there are some very unpleasant implementations coming up that will be much nicer if we can keep all our customer information in the customer master file, as opposed to having to mangle up a cross reference to an IFS file to store stream file stuff.
