<snip>
Why do you say that? With the terrible shortage of RPG programmers
today, you'd think this would have a lot of weight...

Where? Before I came to my current company, I looked and looked and I
was willing to relocate but couldn't even get responses. Companies
wouldn't even talk to you unless you lived within a few miles of the
companies.
Of course, my problem is that I am extremely heavy ILE. Most of the
company I talk to don't want anyone to do anything except RPG III and to
maintain old dead code. One look at my ILE work and no thanks.
I keep hearing there is a storage of RPG programmers but I sure don't
see it. I couldn't even get companies in LA or Orange County to respond.
As far as losing AS/400's, at least 3 major shops in the Seattle area
are dumping AS/400 and going to Oracle. Problem gets to be that all they
are now looking for AS/400 programmers to keep this old stuff running
until they can dump it. Just slap a band aid on and keep it running.
Company in Montana just dumped AS/400 and talked to one in Utah and a
couple of other places, all dumping AS/400 for something else.
Very depressing.
Now just so I am clear, I think this is pure insanity dumping the AS/400
for something like Oracle which has the worst customer support in the
world but this stuff is being sold to CEO and CFO.
