I use CA's Web Option to deliver a browser version of our 5250 application.
The response from the browser delivers screens where you can watch the time
increment by 1 second. The server has to interrogate the 5250 datastream,
merge the data with HTML templates, retrieve values for drop down lists
(externalized for NLS enablement), retrieve messages for literals (NLS
again), all with very acceptable response times. We have users that prefer
the browser interface over 5250, and don't use 5250 emulation any longer.
Now, with all that is being done by Web Option, I can easily believe it's
possible to deliver web applications with very snappy response times. We
have another web site that is CGI, performing business rules on the iSeries
server, and response times there are very quick as well.
No need for Websphere, use Apache and Tomcat.
