Heckfire Tommy, you got it all wrong. %dec is not used to take a packed string like x'40400F' and convert it into a numeric. By the way, assuming that really is numeric the value would be 4040.0 if it is a 5.1 packed field. And, x'40', is almost always a sure bet that you have spaces in a numeric field because a space is x'40'. That is trying to convert space, space and whatever the heck a x'0F' is; into a decimal number. I would load that bad boy into a data structure. And wrap the first use of that numeric field with a Monitor group. If it is well and truly FUBAR then your monitor group can catch it, like if someone stores the word CAT in those three characters.
