Couple of things I'm curious about. Why bother with a join LF? If the customer is keying the information (i.e. customer name) I think a simple SETLL & READE would perform much better in this case. /free SetLL cust_name custmast; DoU %EOF; ReadE cust_name custmast; Chain cust_num secondary; /end-free Also are there duplicates in the customer master file? If not then just chaining to the customer master should suffice. FWIW I prefer not to use fields like customer name as a key value...it's just too darn prone to fail due to keying the name in wrong, etc. Personally I would much prefer to have a "prompt" window subfile that displayed the name (with the customer number hidden) then return the customer number to the main proc to use as a key. Anyway I digress, I believe the SETLL & READE or CHAIN method will perform much faster than Join LF for this. (I've never been a big fan of joined LFs btw....) The purpose of the control file is to limit what items a customer can buy. The customer name is on the customer maser file and the number is on both files. I can't place the smaller file first, because the name is on the larger file and that is what I want to use as my key. Could it be a system problem? We have contacted IBM about the problem but it is takes forever to get an answer back from them.
