Nope - hence the confusion - both 4,n and 5,n take up 3 bytes Rule is, add 1, then divide by 2 and round up.
And when it comes to defining binary numerics you specify how many bytes long the field is rather than actual size of the numeric field, the number is actually stored as hexadecimal rather than packed, negative numbers count down from the top, etc...
Not that hard to remember, but fairly easy to overlook in a late night coding session...
