Is the 80 byte field the first alphanumeric field?
Is it being passed a constant versus a variable?
Any CL involved?

Often passing constants can be an issue.  The list has a FAQ about the

I am not sure that converting from RPG/400 to RPGLE and switching from 
*ENTRY PLIST to a "Procedure Interface" would help your parameter 
overlays.
