Reading a stream file from the IFS

I have a need to automatically download data that has been placed on the
IFS into an iSeries file. This is very much a new playing area for me,
so I decided to read Scott Klement's excellent work "Working with the
IFS in RPG IV"

I have cut and paste the source statements he provides for CH2ERRNO
(Example of writing & reading data to a Stream File) but when I compile,
I get the error 
*RNF7542  Parameter cannot be passed by reference when it can be changed
during the call.    

Attached is the compile listing. Perhaps someone could steer me in the
right direction. This is the first time I have played with
sub-procedures and prototypes, so I would really appreciate some
feedback.
