Document Management and Production

Some years back we decided to use a product called 'Titan' for the production 
of documents. Titan bridged the gap between the IBM AS/400 computer system and 
Winword allowing us to write a 'Titan' print request on the AS/400 that 
ulitmatley produced a Microsoft word document on our print server. 

'Titan' mangaged both the production of the document and the saving of the 
original image. Registering the document produced so that further copies could 
be requested at a later stage.

The solution involved, allowed a WYSIWYG approach to document production by use 
of a template for the document. This approach proved to provide an easier 
document development path, than what had gone before (attempting to produce 
documents by purely positioning data fields on a page) and for that reason 
alone should have been a solution that we would not have wanted to change.

However, it was known soon after we implemented the solution that the print 
server would often fall over when volume printing was involved - this was put 
down to memory leakage and to that aim the solution to our problem was to add 
more memory to the server - this did alleviate the problem and allow bulk runs 
to be processed without word falling over. However, since this time we have 
never completely resolved the problem.

As we are now looking to increase the workload placed on our print servers yet 
again we are concerned that the problem of memory leakage and ultimately print 
crashes during document production may mean that we need to deploy a new print 
document system.

As we have not really looked at what print document management systems are 
currently available. I have been asked to see whether any of you have a WYSIWYG 
document print management system and whether you are happy with its performance.

We are currently producing print runs of 2000 documents per night which we 
anticipate rising to 3000 documents very shortly.
