You forgot to mention that some letters
> are considered numbers by TESTN.That's because some letters ARE numbers according to the EBCDIC character set definition. I didn't want to start a 'TESTN is better than %check()' thread. I was only replying to the idea that there is a place for indicators in a brand new, written from scratch program.
I appreciate all the alternatives, and believe you me, I looked at them. In the end, 2 lines of code using TESTN were very appropriate here given the dataset I was dealing with.
