Because once you dumb yourself down to ANSI standards, your applications tend to run like molasses. C isn't quite as bad, but it's often a lot easier to use OS-specific calls that to use the ANSI equivalent (and, too, lots of programmers don't even know what ANSI compliance is, much less why they should code to it).
