Yep - and that seems to be the case. I can generate a nice little applet
that puts up a nice little screen and does most of the event processing.
I just cannot get the doggone thing to connect to a database...

At least using the ODBC/JDBC part. I guess I could hand write the Java to
do the database connections and such, but it sure seems like VARPG should
be able to do it. I could be wrong of course, or it may be something about
Applets that doesn't let it work. The manual specifically says that JDBC
won't work, but I rather assumed that to mean that ODBC would.

Paul,

An applet is just a java class that has been deployed via an HTML page
reference. That makes it a "think client" in that the java classes are
transferred to the local client machine (at least once). So the decision
to create a java "applet" is just an implementation question, not a
programming one. Theoretically any stand alone java program can be
deployed via an applet.

As I understand it, VisualAge can generate java classes. You could
reference that class from within the and HTML page with an applet tag.
e.g.

<APPLET CODE=/AppletSubclass/.class WIDTH=/anInt/ HEIGHT=/anInt/>
<PARAM NAME=/parameter1Name/ VALUE=/aValue/>
<PARAM NAME=/parameter2Name/ VALUE=/anotherValue/>
</APPLET>

So, the issue about an applet is more of an implementation issue rather
than something determined by using Visual Age.

At least that is my understanding.

Well, the applet is served off the same machine, but the user is

using
CGI, or even just distributing a thick client, but an Applet would be so
easy...

If its on the same machine, does it have to be an applet? Why not a
regular Windows program?

It suggest that because the answer to your question is "Yes, but its
not
pretty"

P. Raulerson wrote:

Is it possible to create an applet from VARPG and have it access a

database?

If so, has anyone got an example they are willing to share? Needs to

access

a DB/2 UDB database running on the same Windows machine that is
serving

up

the applet.

Help?

Thanks
