You are absolutely right and I totally agree. I've always changed programs
when I see this.  But like I said, it is not my code and I wanted to know
why it compiled at V5R2 and not at V5R3.  Birgitta was kind enough to
explain everything.

You know what?  I never understood the logic of
select itemnbr into :itemnbr
from myfile
where itemnbr=:itemnbr
If you already know itemnbr, why the hell are you asking for it's value
again?  Try removing itemnbr, and just leave the rest of the desired
fields, on the select statement.
