Brian, I don't base it on knowledge, but on a "gut feeling". If you use SQL, there's no need to open the file in your trigger program, all information you need (file name, library name, member name) are included in the trigger buffer. Then again, you probably would open the file anyway to do the delete (I'd also use SQL for that). Just my 2 Euro-cents. I prefer to use the old-style file I/O methods. Is it written somewhere that trigger programs can't count on the FIDS?
