Sometimes the conversion and subsequent testing can be very helpful.Part of a project on which I am working contained an RPG36 program. Since I had a few minutes to burn, I converted it to RPG IV (free format); aka "the whole nine yards." Since I don't like the /end-free, /free bracketing around MOVE's and ADD's, I converted them to EVAL's. Testing blew up because, as we all know, EVAL's won't roll over the way ADD's and such do. Seems this simple little report had in one section, anyway, when wrong for years.

I doubt if you would get any speed advantage. I'm sure the compiler is more efficient, but any gain would probably be small. I take the approach of converting source when I need to make a change to it. Otherwise I leave it alone. You would have a big testing project if you were to convert all that code. I would think you would want to unit test each program and perform regression testing on the system. Would there be any advantage for me to run the CVTRPGSRC on the source and recompile it again? Would I see any gains in speed with the converted programs? This would be under the assumption that I would not do anything but convert and compile (yet!). Thanks, Brian. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Brian Piotrowski Assistant Mgr. - I.T.
