Is this non-as/400 programmer writing directly to the database or is he
sending data to you app and your app is updating the database? If it's a
direct update DB2/400 is going to reject the update and I don't think
there is anyway around that. Maybe putting an allow null on the field
but blank is different than null. If you have an app that gets the data
first you should define it as a 9 character field, test it for valid
numeric and the move it to the database field if it is
