The solution was to go back to the original parameter definition of varying 
character, then convert the input parms to UCS2 for the chain.

 grMCU = %UCS2(gsqMCU) ;
 grUM = %UCS2(gsqUM) ;

 Chain (grMCU:gsqItm:grUM) F41002_1;
