I think what happened to performance is that we've been saying in response to: "What's faster a MOVEL or an EVAL?" The answer is "Who cares?"
Respectfully, I believe that most people who ask that question want a simple answer that they can use universally, without considering any context whatsoever. There is no simple, easy to apply rule (The Secret) that makes performance better, and that is what is implied by questions like 'is MOVE faster than Z-ADD?'
When pressed, I always advise that the greatest influencer of performance in a business application is I/O, hands down, but I stress that performance adjustment requires measurement, analysis and educated tweaks in order to be effective.
