8. RE: Jakarta POI - HWPF for word files (Scott Klement)This is often the case with this "free" software. Most of the time, people are doing it in the spare time, however frequently the unemployed (i.e., recent grad students) are doing it to play in the sandbox and to get their resumes out there.

As for HPWF, it's absurd to complain about the fact that nobody is developing it. It has never reached a point where it was useful software, the only people who have used it are developers who were in the process of writing it. Nobody is left in the lurch with HPWF.
Further and more importantly, just because a project is abandoned doesn't mean it's gone. All of it still exists. ANYBODY who might've downloaded it could still have it. It still works the same as it always did. You can keep it forever. If I use some freeware, I keep copies of what I downloaded. There are a couple that I have that I will never upgrade because they do exactly what I want and a later release changed licensing. Rather than agree to the new license, I continue using the 'obsolete' version. And for open source, you can even enhance it yourself if you _really_ want a new feature. Tom Liotta
