When the user types in a name in an email or word document you enable them to right click the name and get a popup menu containing information retrieved from a server. This is really neat in Excel where you can program/automate - whatever word you understand - things so the customer number in a cell is always validated against the as400 database, etc That would be automating out so to speak. Another way to automate is if you are in a desktop application and the you want to startup a new word document from the information on their screen. Instead of creating a document file the programmer uses the COM or .NET interfaces to Word to startup the word processor, open a new document, then insert paragraphs, etc for the initial values of the document.
