For all those who may have been following my travails with writing to the IFS (probably just two others). I finally found the solution to the problem of obtaining an ASCII output direct to an IFS file. The solution is in the RedBook - Sorcerers Guide RPGIV.pdf (I haven't got the URL as I have the down-loaded the PDF). On page 266 example code and full explanations are provided. It seems that the act of opening the file is simply a prelude to writing of the records in ASCII format. In fact, in order to write records in ASCII format, the file has to be created, then closed then re-opened. The redbook provides a comprehensive explanation on page 273 which puts the whole thing into perspective. I can now generate an XML to the IFS with a properly formatted file name and in ASCII such that IE can open the document. Thank you to those who contributed, and I hope that this little reference can help others who hit brick walls at great speed.
