I wonder how long Uu401c is?  Try this and see if you get what you want:

C     eval   Ser2 = '(' + %char(Uu40ic) +  ')'
or
C     eval   Ser2 = '(' + %trim(Uu40ic) + ')'

depending on whether Uu40ic is char or dec.
