You don't need to know much about Java to use the POI/HSSF classes from RPG. I've written a series of articles that provide enough information to get started. It's worth reading, at any rate.

If you'd prefer to buy something, there are vendors offering this type of product. I've tested iExcelGen from Goering, it seemed to work, though I didn't use it in production since I went the POI/HSSF route.
