Hi, an escape message causes an abnormal end of the procedure. This failure can be trapped with a monitor group or with %Error, if you call the procedure with CALLP(E) or *PSSR-Routine. If the failure is not handled, it is handled by the default message handler, that means the first program in the call stack ends abnormally. With other solutions we sometimes had the problem, that even though an error flag or an error message was returned from an procdure or program, it was simply ignored and the caller program continued and produced a lot of garbage. Now you cannot ignore an abnormal end of a procedure. You either have to handle it or everything ends abnormal and all data get rolled back. As long as the activation group of the service program gets not ended, it stays active. It does not matter if a procedure is ended normally or abnormally. I've not had a chance to do a lot of *escape message from a service program. Do you know what state the service program will be in after sending *escape message from a procedure? Meaning, is the service program still active? -----Original Message----- From: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of HauserSSS Example: ChkItemNoActive --> Returns *On or *Off, ChkItemNoActiveBreak --> without return value, but sends a break message if not active or not found. Depending on the requirements I either call the first or the second one. -- This is the RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries (RPG400-L) mailing list To post a message email: RPG400-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/rpg400-l or email: RPG400-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/rpg400-l.
