No, I don't know of a way to do that. What you're really looking for is output specs that write to a variable :)

BTW, I'm sure this was just a simple mistake, but it's %EDITC not %EDTCDE. Frustratingly, I've seen published articles and books that refer to the non-existant %EDTCDE! The BIF is actually %EDITC.
