This was an interesting inquiry, I will say.
If I have this straight, you want to define a 2-position character field, that
is a field whose length is %size(myPackedField) where myPackedField is Pkd(3,0).
Have I got that right?

D myPkdField s 3P 0

D myDS DS
D mySubfield Like(myPkdField)

D myCharField S Like(myDS)

The MYCHARFIELD will be character and a length of 2, which is what you wanted, I
believe.

If you are willing to be off by 1 char one even number size pack field,
you could do below:
D numDS1 ds
D numField1 10p 0
D numField2 like(numField1)

D numDS2 ds
D numField3 5p 0
D numField4 like(numField3)

D charDs ds
D charField1 -1 like(numDS1)
D charField2 -1 like(numDS2)

If you compile about, you should see that charField1 is decalred as 11
bytes long and charField2 is 5 bytes long.

Since are Charles, I'm sure you know why that is the case :).

Not sure about pack field. However, it can be done in zone field.

D numDS ds
D numField 10 0

D charDs ds
D charField like(numDS)

Subject: Easy way to define a DS char subfield the same size as some
numericfield?

All,

I've got a standalone field defined as packed(3,0).

Is there an easy way to define a DS subfiled as char(3)?

In other words, given any specific numeric field, how can a define a
corresponding character field large enough to hold the numeric data
without having to hardcode the subfield size?

The DS is used to send out an email message. If there isn't an easy way
to do what I want, I'll just get rid of the DS altogether and use eval +
some bifs to build the message. That may be a better option, but for
instructional purposes, I would like to show a DS without hard coded
sizes.

Thanks,

Charles Wilt
