It appears that CHGPF does, in essence, copy the changed PF to a temporary work space. So there wouldn't appear to be much, if any, difference. I constantly have to change files of over 1 million records with versions in six different libraries. Just rebuilding the LF's over them is a time saver.

Have I actually put a stop watch against the two methods? No. Not worth the effort. It takes less than 5 minutes to rebuild those files I mentioned. YMMV

Need some help with changing a PF. I have a file with 3.5 million
records. I have changed the DDS to include a new field at the end of the
record. Does anyone know if it would be quicker to rename the file,
recreate the PF and copy the records from the renamed file to the new
file OR do a CHGPF on the old file.
