Hello Don... CHGPF is usually faster when doing simple changes like adding a field to the end (as opposed to adding in the middle or renaming fields). However, if you start adjusting the structure of the file, you're going to get level checks on the new file and you'll have to re-compile anything that touches it or any associated logicals.
