An alternative you might consider is to use the DSM APIs.  They were
designed to allow C programmers to have access to a more familiar method of
screen handling than that available with 5250.  "Familiar" for most C
programmers would include VT100.  You may find that you can map the VT100
responses directly - or at least fairly closely by using DSM.
