I suppose "learning royalties" could include talking to the users and
finding out what screens/programs they use to work with royalties. I
should think your boss would appreciate that kind of initiative. I know
mine does.

If you have a Q/A environment, you could play with the screens yourself
and try to understand the business workflow surrounding royalties. and
then see how the programs fit into that.

I had a similar "annual goal" to "learn inventory" here last year. I
scheduled a few meetings with the business analyst and talked to a
couple users. This, in addition to a fairly heavy workload of unrelated
projects.

It also helps to coordinate such goals with the person who assigns
projects, so that you make sure any projects related to that area come
your way. It definitely takes extra effort to try to learn something
that you don't work with every day. But that's the bizarre position IT
finds ourselves in. We not only have to understand how to use the tools
we need to do our job, we also have to understand a fair amount about
everyone else's job, so we can design effective programs that will
benefit the company.

|As far as learning the business, that would mean formally declaring
that I

|
|I have been told not to challenge authority.
|
|I was told to 'learn royalies'. it consists of some CL and RPG's. There
is
|not that much to do w/ it. IMO, you learn a system, by taking a users
|call, by modifying a program, etc...
|Not by sitting and reading CL's.
