After following the recent thread about problems with windowed subfiles, I thought about a prototype that I built years ago for performing lookups.

Warning...this is greatly simplified...

Problem:
In ProgramA, I have a data-entry subfile named OrderDtl for order entry.
There is a input-capable field in the data-entry subfile for the Item number.

I have another program (ProgramB) that allows you to perform item lookups by positioning to an item number and paging through a windowed subfile named ItemDtl in order to select the item number that you wish to use.

Solution:
I created a single display file DDS (call it Subfiles) containg both subfiles, and declared this display file in BOTH ProgramA and ProgramB.

By using OVRDSPF FILE(SUBFILES) SHARE(*YES) before calling ProgramA, I can now share the subfiles between the two programs, and my Item Lookup program can directly update the correct subfile record in the OrderDtl record format with the Item Number information via the shared display file...

Regards,
Steve
