Immeasurably better. Not only do you have auto-completion for variables and online help for BIFs, but you have the VERIFY function, which in effect does a complete syntax scan of your source code very quickly.
Hmmm... I've never been able to get VERIFY to work, it doesn't seem to load my /COPY members, and therefore can't find half of my definitions and gives me a hundreds of errors.
I've also found it to be much slower than a compile, though this might be because of the aforementioned errors.
Not quite the immediate gratification of a line-by-line syntax check, but still quite effective.
Not any more so than a compile -- unless, of course, verify works a lot better for you than it does for me.
