You'll want to use "for read only" as part of the sql select (at the end of the statement) and I believe you won't get the record lock. You could also do some searching on "read only" iseries SQL. There are some good articles out there.

to make sure that I lock the record before updating it.  Just like CHAIN
and UPDATE operation code.  Do I have to SET something in OPTIONS?  Also
I don't want my files to be journaled to do that.
