RE: Sample Free Form RPG program w/embedded SQL

Excuse my lack of knowledge about this, but our shop is (so far) Old
School RPG, and my specialty is systems administration, with very
limited RPG App development. 
How is :someDS defined?

Nope,

As you can't use embedded SQL in free form.

You have to exit free form to use embedded SQL.

 /end-free
c/exec SQL
c+ select * from myFile into :someDS
c+  where field = 1
c/end-exec
