Or instead of modifying the program(s) that maintain the detail file, put 
a trigger on the detail file to maintain the summary.

Or an SQL view?

Any of these solutions result in spreading the hit out over the 
maintenance versus the run of the report.  And if the maintenance is done 
via user interaction one additional chain/update in between presses of the 
enter key will be unnoticeable on any machine bigger than a B10.
