unfortunately, we have to remain backward compatible with V5R1 until all 
our machines have been upgraded to 5.3.

I have meanwhile made an ugly spaghetti-resembling "program", which does 
what I need.

You can't do a lot of what you want with APIs and RPG.
Did you know in V5R3 that CL now supports more structured programming
constructs? You have the equivalent of the Select/When statement in CL for
ILE in V5R3.
I'm like you, however, if I can find a way to do it with RPG, I'll avoid 
CL
at _any_ cost.
