For free-format SQL, we do the following: 
http://code.midrange.com/index.php?id=9be283ae0e. This is our standard 
template, so please forgive the mess.

Basically we code a subproceedure within the main code that executes the SQL 
statement. I got this idea from another person in our organization and has 
been working great. The only thing better would be to actually be able to 
have the code inline.
