Kirt, I was able to do exactly what you say you cannot do with a MODS. I could only do it by referencing definitions using LIKE(). Explicit definitions in a MODS did not work. By using a MODS there is also an assumption that you will be using the FOR x ROWS. I think its these two that are the problem when explicitly definition a MODS. You DO NOT need to create a character field for a date in a MODS. Just make sure the date field is LIKE() defined (from internal or external definition) and make sure that the program and SQL date formats are the same.
