In my DB2 to csv routine[1] I extract data from a program described file and put data identified as packed into a packed field before formatting it. I just use data structures to handle the conversion from packed to string & vice versa - see http://dbg400.net/cgi-bin/twiki/view/DBG400/RpgleDBG201R4 in the ParseLine subroutine.
