Re: how to populate the field when the field name is stored as variable?

Well, I have heard of creating SELECT clauses that eval the value into the 
appropriate field. i.e.

Read File2; // <--- use format name here

Dow Not %EOF(File2);
Select;
When Field='ITMNUM';
ITMNUM=value;
When Field='CATCOD';
CATCOD=value;
When Field='DISCDT';
DISCDT=value; // <-- do some date validation here
EndSL;
Read File2;
EndDo;

I am not sure how to detect when to actually write the output record. Are 
the fields always in sequence in FILE2? if so, then on the last WHEN above, 
write the record. Otherwise, you could detect after the SELECT clause, if 
the record is fully populated, and conditionally WRITE.
