What I have done in the past, doesn't necessarily involve less work, but 
seems to accomodate the need. 

I usually build a single alpha field as the subfile record, and then use 
hidden fields for the real data. Then I create data structures based on the 
multiple record types I want to show, and EVAL the appropriate . With the 
ability to color sections of an alpha field (which I just learned from this 
message group -- thanks again!), this allows you to show or not show 
whatever you want, with colors and attributes, per subfile record.
