What's a user index? Do you have examples of how to create and use a user index? Frank <Rick.Chevalier@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>@midrange.com on 05/17/2005 10:50:06 AM Please respond to RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries <rpg400-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent by: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx To: <rpg400-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> cc: Subject: RE: work files in qtemp Douglas, Files, or any object for that matter, placed into QTEMP go away when the job ends. The QTEMP library is unique for each job and only exists while a given job is running. Probably the most common way to get objects into QTEMP is to use CRTDUPOBJ although there are several others. I would like to suggest the use of a user index for your purposes. I rarely use work files anymore having replaced them with user indexes. They can be created on the fly, the format is flexible, the data is sorted as it is added much like a logical file, and they perform well. According to IBM documentation they are faster than data files. HTH, Rick -----Original Message----- From: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Douglas W. Palme Sent: Tuesday, May 17, 2005 10:42 AM To: RPG Group Subject: work files in qtemp I have been working on a program that will reuqire me to use some sort of temporary hold file, a friend suggested that I use a work file in qtemp for the processing of the data...however, I have never used work files before, let alone in qtemp. Should I just create the file in my library and then copy it to the qtemp directory and then process the data deleting the file once I am done? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
