I have another option for you to consider.

I have found that if you compile your DSPF with the defer write option set
to *NO (it defaults to *YES), that you can send a message to the user's
screen immediately when you issue a WRITE command from within your program.
Fill in whatever you want the message to say in the field MSGTXT from
within your program before you write the message record. Here's how I coded
the message record line in the DSPF to display a 1-line message at the
bottom of the users screen...just make sure to display the message on a
line that isn't being used for anything else.

 A*
 A* Processing Message
 A*
 A R MSG CLRL(*NO)
 A MSGTXT 79A 22 1DSPATR(PC)

I'm trying to figure out how to display a screen without requiring the
program to wait for a response.

The idea is to display "Processing...please wait" while a program is
called to process data, then returns a few seconds later with results to
display.

I found something on this topic in the archives, but unfortunately it
was only a discussion of whether it would be better to use SNDPGMMSG or
display a whole screen. I would prefer the latter, but don't know how
to go about it.

Any suggestions ?
