× The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.

1 - Record layout independence.
If you have an application that spans multiple versions of the same vendor
software and you want to use one version of custom programming. And you
don't want native rpg's record format level check. We did have an
application that used SQL for just that situation.
2 - Trying to select/sort on the fly.
Let's say you have a subfile full of records. Now the user wants to click
on a column and sort by that column.
3 - Anything that you might use OPNQRYF for.
'nuff said.
4 - Use of functions not available in RPGLE. Like SOUNDEX.
5 - Large set-at-a-time updates and selects.

Many of this stuff could be done in RPG. But it may not be as productive
as with SQL. And there may be certain cases where SQL could outperform
doing the same function in RPGLE. Although never assume anything on that.

Subject
Embeded SQL in RPG what are some good scenarios where it would be useful?

This is an innocent question and I hope this doesn't lead to an all out
war
on the virtues of using SQL........... :}

I'm curious on what are some situations when it would be a good idea to
use
embedded SQL in RPG?

Sorry for the very broad question, but I'm not very familiar with using it
in RPG and wanted to know if its something I should learn more about.

Andy
