It's starting to sink in now. ldap_init just creates the data structure. You then use the ldap_simple_bind or ldap_simple_bind_s (and not the deprecated ldap_bind) and if that hurls then you know that the name is horsehocky. It doesn't actually attempt to make the connection at the point where you call the API.
