Difference betwen Exfmt and Write/Read

Hi
 
I am practised to use Exfmt command to show the screen. Could anyone tell me 
what is the difference between Exfmt and Combined Write/Read of Display file. I 
heard both of them do the same. Is it so?. or is there any other difference ?. 
At what suituation one can use that. Please let me know...
