How would you do this in a Web interface?

You would proces this probably in a FORM with action POST or GET which will be 
activated on SUBMIT. This is similar to the block mode processing of a 5250 
data stream, methinks.
Unless, a javascript (on-exit event) on the input field allows connection to 
the AS/400 for verification and fetching the required data.

Just curious how others have solved this.
