Well, although probably not RPG related, use the functions in SQL to accomplish this: Update FileXXX Set Field1=Left(Field1,5) || '2' || Right(Field1, Length(Field1)-6); It kinda spoils me in RPG to either use a DS, or just use the %SUBST BIF.
