In SQL, you must update the entire field.  In your case, the statement would
be as follows:
UPDATE FILEXXX SET FIELD1 = SUBSTR(FIELD1,1,5) || '2'

If the field length is longer than 6, you would need an additional SUBSTR
for the remaining length.

Why this limitation exists is for others than I to answer.
