Okay, well, the good news is that my understanding of SCOPE (the
programming concept, not the mouthwash) is 100%.


So, you're saying that you don't understand the mouthwash?

I mistakenly _did_ re-declare the two variables in question inside the subprocedure 'P' specs, causing the creation of another, private copy of the variables, masking access to the 'real' EXTFILE variables. 

I kinda figured it was something like that. :)
